Audrey's Door

"Audrey's Door" is the latest book by horror author Sarah Langan. The above very well done trailer makes it look like an interesting read.

There's a promo website for the book here and you can pick up a copy over on Amazon.

Thanks again to RR for the recommendation.

Creepy / Eerie Archives

I can't say I'm much of a comics guy but I was pleased to discover that Dark Horse has recently done a series of Creepy and Eeerie Archives. These all look really amazing.

Here's a little background on Creepy if you're interested.

What says "Thanksgiving" better than avant garde Australian death metal?

You can learn more about Portal on their MySpace page.

Le Dernier Cri in NYC

(Photos courtesy of Pakito Bolino)

Le Dernier Cri is probably my favorite "art" publisher / collective. These crazy French freaks are currently having a print and book show at Cinders Gallery in Brooklyn featuring works of the weirdest artists in the world. If I can scrape together some change I'm going to get up and there and see it for sure.

The show runs November 20th - December 19th 2009. You can get details at the Cinders Gallery Website. None of the links in this post are really work safe BTW.

Click here to see the rest of these photos as a slide show.

Also make sure to check out the Le Dernier Cri website and blog.

Udo Keir Interview / My Son My Son

It's not the most exciting interview ever done with Udo Keir but I always enjoy hearing him talk. He's still looking suave as well.

In the interview Keir mentions the movie "My Son My Son What Have You Done?" which looks promising...

Requiem & Black Roller Crop Rotation

Requiem 1
(Requiem live - click image to enlarge)

On November 13th I saw my friend David Graham (aka Requiem) play live here in Philadelphia. The band Black Roller Crop Rotation opened. Both projects did different takes on heavy experimental drone.

I took some photos of the show - you can see the entire set over on my Flickr page.

Check out Requiem on his MySpace site. Also, click here for my previous post on David's work.

You can learn more about Black Roller Crop Rotation over at Crucial Blast.

Moutheater / Debris Amour

(Shirt design by Ben Sears)

Andrew Aircraft from the bands Moutheater and Debris Amour was kind enough to send me a couple of CDs. He also allowed me to host one MP3 from each release. I enjoyed these discs but sadly, I don't have time to go into a serious critique. My little blurbs below even took me a lot longer to get down than I'd like to admit.

First up, Moutheater's "Ornament." To put it simply, this is some dark, heavy, pissed but not one dimensional ROCK bordering on metalcore. When I say ROCK, I am thinking something in the vein of Melvins and Jesus Lizard but, Moutheater sounds like neither band. They also had the balls to throw in some atonal experimental and noise to mix it up. There's a lot going on here and it's all done with a nice rich production.

You can download an MP3 for the song "Obsolete Rhythm" here.

You can also check out more Moutheater on their MySpace page and pick up their album over at Thrashed Records.

Andrew's solo experimental project is Debris Amour and this disc is called "Notations in Negativity." The sound ranges from totally crushing power electronics to nearly ambient pieces. I won't even try to describe this any further except to say it's a very ambitious combination of experimental styles. This release is limited to only 40 copies so don't wait to get it if you are interested.

You can download the download an MP3 for the song "Hate Letter/Love Letter" here.

Here's a link to the Debris Amour MySpace page and "Notations in Negativity" is available from Swim Harder Cassettes.

Trine + Kim

Trine + Kim is a Norwegian design studio perhaps best known for their exquisite packaging for bands like Mayhem, Enslaved, Ihsahn and Darkthrone.

They just released a beautiful book called "Decade" which features "a selection of our cover artworks. 160 pages. Hardback. Only 150 copies made. Other items are the Decade shirt, the Psykosedyr CD, postcards, limited edition prints and other selected titles."

You can check out their book + the other Decade merch, design portfolio and much more at trineogkim.no. They also have a blog at trineandkim.blogspot.com

Thanks to Rennie Resmini for the suggestion.

Kurushimi

I ran into Japanese drone musician Saya Sakura online and thought I would share her work as Kurushimi.

As she says, Saya "has been a revolving member in a number of noise/drone projects over the last 12 years. She has self-released several now out-of print drone albums under the name Kurushimi."

Saya has been kind enough to allow me to host two versions of her song "Kuchihateru" for your downloading pleasure:

Kuchihateru - Edit (5.5 megs / 4:02 mins)

Kuchihateru - Full Version (22.5 megs / 16:21 mins)

You can hear more Kurushimi on her GarageBand page and ReverbNation page.

Krautrock

Since I recently posted the excellent BBC doc on UK Synth Pop I figured some of you might be interested in this one as well. You can watch the rest of this doc on YouTube starting here.

And never forget... Das Leben ist wie ein Kinderhemd--kurz und beschissen.

UPDATE 11.18.09 - the Vimeo.com versions of all these BBC music docs have been taken down. Thankfully the Krautrock and Synth Britannia docs are still up at YouTube. Sorry, the Prog Rock Britannia Documentary is not on YouTube as of now.

Nirvana 2002

I must admit I remember listening to the classic comp "Projections of a Stained Mind" back in the early 90's but Nirvana 2002 never made much of an impression on me. Fast forward to now and damn... this is some delicious sounding Swedish death metal.

Won't you tell us more Relapse promo blurb?

Before there was a Swedish Death Metal scene - let alone a signature sound - Nirvana 2002 was helping to create both. Recordings 89-91 a collection of rare demos and rehearsals, is not just a nostalgic time capsule from the past, but a glimpse at what the future would hold.

The whole album is available to stream online here. And you can check out the band's MySpace page here.

You can get this CD and a very old school looking shirt over at Relapse. You can also get the album from iTunes here.

Synth Britannia

This is just Part 1 of 9 that are all on YouTube. Thanks to Bauke for reminding me about this.

I got a boner just from the intro. If you haven't noticed I am a wee bit of a analogsynthophile.

Let's lighten the mood... heeeeeeere's Fenriz.

You know, I was never much of a Dark Throne fan but I have to say that Fenriz cracks me up and his "Trapped Under Vice" comps are really excellent (thank you Mr. Reed). You can get Vol 1 here and Vol 2 here. The recent Dark Throne stuff is pretty great too. I appreciate their current sense of humor and more rockin' sound. It's a pretty brave style change considering Dark Throne's evil rep.

Check out Dark Throne on MySpace.

This video is great too (gotta love Adrenalin O.D.)...

You can see the whole interview here.

Rituals

I've never seen this rare "Deliverance" take off but I have heard it mentioned among cult film fans for years. "Rituals" comes out on DVD in the U.S. thanks to Code Red on November 17th. I am definitely looking forward to checking it out.

Here's the product description:

Mitzi (Lawrence Dane, SCANNERS, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME) invites a fellow Doctor Harry (Award winning Hal Halbrook, INTO THE WILD, CAPRICORN ONE) and two other doctors to go on a camping trip in middle of nowhere in the Canadian mountain. They thought there were alone, but not knowing someone is watching them. A Harmless trip turns into a nightmare and murder as the psychopath plays a deadly psychological game of survival. Robin Gammell (LIPSTICK) co-stars. Special Make-up by Carl Fullerton (FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 & 3). Un-cut and uncensored from a vault element from the producer!

You can check out the trailer here and pre-order the DVD here.

Night of the Creeps

Sony recently released the classic 80's horror / comedy "Night of the Creeps" on DVD and Blu-ray. As well as a director's cut of the film, each release includes commentary with Writer/ Director Fred Dekker, a cast commentary, featurettes ("Birth of the Creeps", "Cast of the Creeps", "Creating the Creeps", "Escape of the Creeps", "Legend of the Creeps", "Tom Atkins: Man of Action"), the original theatrical ending, deleted scenes, and a trivia track.

If you like the horror in the vein of Evil Dead 2, Street Trash and Bad Taste and haven't seen this film, you are really missing out. You can check out the trailer here.

You can pick up a copy of "Night of the Creeps" on DVD here and Blu-ray here.

Javelina

“I hate it.” - Murderface, of Cartoon Network’s Dethklok

"...adroitly flips the script between frenetic bar brawling and epic power chord beatdowns - your brain won't know if you're supposed to groove and head-bang or duck and cover from all the flying shrapnel." 8/10 - Decibel Magazine

“The ghosts of drug-addled Black Sabbath and Venom smile up from the deepest pit of Hell.” - Exclaim Magazine

Philadelphia's own Javelina have a new release out called "Beasts Among Sheep." You can check out some of the tracks at myspace.com/javelinaphiladelphia

You can order the CD or LP through Translation Loss Records.

Does the cover artwork look somehow familiar? That's because it was done by early Colors of the Dark contributor Jason Goldberg.

Simon Schama's Power of Art

I did a post on my other blog a while back on the TV / DVD series "Simon Schama's Power of Art." For more on the TV show check out that post here.

Until today I didn't realize that there is a companion book as well. The above image is from the import cover. I will have to get my hands on this eventually. Schama definitely has a way with words so I have to imagine it's an excellent read. You can get it here on Amazon.

¡Feliz Dia de los Muertos!

I recommend you watch the above video with a soundtrack of your own choosing.

Loop

"Discordant, elusive and utterly hypnotic, Loop conjured a dark, trance-like spell that contrasted sharply with the prevailing British pop music trends of their time. Equal parts the Stooges, Can and Hawkwind, in tandem with fellow travellers Spacemen 3 they resurrected the concept of space-rock for a new era, creating droning soundscapes of bleak beauty and harsh dissonance."
- allmusic.com

I have been a huge fan of Loop since the early 90's so I was pleased to see all their albums getting reissued with bonus tracks recently. If the above quote speaks to you in any way and you haven't heard this band, do yourself a favor. I personally like every note Loop recorded but "Gilded Eternity" is my favorite so I recommend you start there. Here's an Amazon page with all the reissues in one spot.

There's an official website with interviews etc at heavensend.org (this is an offshoot of Loop main man Robert Hampson's website).

Also, you can check out streaming songs as well as tons of photos and videos over at this MySpace fan page.
