Ten Days of Bizarro Animation - Day One
I will be indisposed for the next ten days. I do have a heart, so in order not to leave you itching for your daily Colors of the Dark fix I bring you ten days of the weirdest animation I could track down in a pinch.
Do you have any favorite weird / dark / surreal animation to suggest? If so, please e-mail the link to me at colorsofthedark at gmail dot com and maybe I’ll bump one of the ten I had picked out or use it in the future. Please just make sure it was made within the last five years. I like to try to keep things current on COTD, in case you haven’t noticed.
Here's my selection for Day One...
We will be back to our regular programming on Friday, September 4th.
Thanks. -Jonathan

Black Anvil

Black Anvil are a black / thrash metal band from New York City. When I say black / thrash metal I mean they really meld the two styles perfectly with very heavy guitars and excellent production. They even do a damn good cover of the classic Celtic Frost anthem "Dethroned Emperor."

Black Anvil's excellent album "Time Insults The Mind" is being reissued by Relapse Records on September 1st. You can pre-order it here.
You can hear some tracks and see a live video on the bands MySpace page and better yet, you can download a free MP3 over here at metalsucks.net.

Acid and Evisceration: Jeff Lieberman Double Feature - Tomorrow Night in Philadelphia!
(The following text is from exhumedfilms.com)
Exhumed Films presents
"Acid and Evisceration: Jeff Lieberman Double Feature"
Saturday, August 22, 2009 8 PM $10
AT THE I-HOUSE
JEFF LIEBERMAN WILL BE APPEARING AT THE SHOW TO INTRODUCE THE FILMS, HOST A Q&A AND SIGN AUTOGRAPHS - SO BRING OUT YOUR SQUIRM, BLUE SUNSHINE AND JUST BEFORE DAWN COLLECTABLES!
(Jeff will be charging a small fee for autographs)
Blue Sunshine
Directed by Jeff Lieberman/US/1976/90 minutes/16mm
This classic cult horror film, from acclaimed writer/director Jeff Lieberman, is a masterpiece of psychological suspense and terror. At a party, someone goes insane and murders three women. Falsely accused of the brutal killings, Jerry (Red Shoe Diaries' Zalman King) is on the run. More bizarre killings continue with alarming frequency all over town. Trying to clear his name, Jerry discovers the shocking truth - people are losing their hair and turning into violent psychopaths and the connection may be some LSD all the murderers took a decade before. Soon, if Jerry can't stop it, the horror will become uncontrollable -- the horror caused by Blue Sunshine!
Just Before Dawn
Directed by Jeff Lieberman/US/1981/99 minutes/16mm
Five youths set out for a weekend camping excursion, to drink, frolic and skinny-dip on an isolated piece of land one of them has inherited. Despite ominous warnings of local forest rangers, strange backwoods families and a hollering drunken hunter claiming to have witnessed his friends evisceration by the hands of "demons", they trek farther into the foliage. Beautifully shot, extremely eerie, featuring the most demented murderer since Jason Voorhees, and a horrifying twist that will make you wonder: Will any of them survive those dark hours just before dawn? Presented here in a very rare longer print with more footage than any video release of the film.
Exhumed Films puts on regular shows of amazing cult films. Yes kids, the original 35 and 16 mm FILMS, plus an always entertaining array of trailers and ads. Thanks to them I have had the honor of seeing screenings of classics like: Black Sabbath, Suspiria, Zombie, The Thing, City of the Walking Dead, Shogun Assassin, Burial Ground, Maniac, The Beyond, Tenebrae, and many many more. If you live in the Philadelphia area make sure to sign up for their mailing list at exhumedfilms.com

Graveyards

Graveyards live in Hasselt, Belgium.
Graveyards is a Michigan based experimental group featuring John Olson (Wolf Eyes, Spykes, and 1000 other projects), Ben Hall, and Hans Buetow. I believe the line up featured in the above photo is different.
I was fortunate enough to see them live here in Philadelphia a couple of weeks ago. They were just plain amazing. The sound went from totally cacophonous jazzy noise to the quietest sound of the drummer running his fingers across his drum heads. It was unlike anything I've ever seen before. It was great to hang out with Olson for a bit as well. He's easily one of the nicest guys I've ever met in music.
Check them out on their MySpace page - myspace.com/graveyardsband
You can pick up their LP with Dead Machines, "Machineyard in Soundworld," over at brokenresearch. Also make sure to check out John Olson's label American Tapes.
Here's a bit of a live show from last year. Quite different from what I saw but very cool...

Many thanks to Rennie Resmini for the excellent suggestion. Very special thanks to Olivier de Sagazan himself for being kind enough to allow me to repost his stunning work.

This movie looks like it'll be a good one. Using a classic Can song in the trailer doesn't hurt either.

love is nothing

love is nothing is the current experimental / metal /ambient project of Lee M. Bartow (aka Leech) who is best known for his former post-industrial noise project Navicon Torture Technologies.
Better for Leech to explain it himself...
"Energy can change form, but cannot be created or destroyed.
We are all hungry ghosts, leaving our mark in the fabric of space and time, leaving our mark on those who come in and out of our lives.
They leave their mark on and within us, as we leave our mark with them.
We may grieve for a time, we may not, but we can not ignore who we are as a result of having experienced them for a time.
At the core of my previous project Navicon Torture Technologies, beneath the visceral, decaying imagery and ranting rape-fantasies, was an attempt to convey a profound sense of loss. Disappointment, unrequited love, fear of being alone, expressed through the rage of the victim-turned-perpetrator.
With love is nothing., these same concepts can be explored, with a somewhat less vicious mode of expression.
Consider NTT as the place in which rage and denial meet, and love is nothing. as the calm that overtakes us as we accept that our fate is far worse than we ever imagined."
Check out love is nothing on MySpace at myspace.com/lovemeansnothingintherealworld
Better yet, go to the official website (with free MP3 downloads): annihilvs.org/love-is-nothing/
Leech also put on events as part of UNSOUND. Further details on their MySpace page at myspace.com/unsoundnyc
